Middle Eastern Dance, also called Belly dancing, or in Europe, La Danse Orientale, is native to the ancient Middle East. It was widely spread by migrations of Rom and other tribal peoples, from India, north to Turkey and west to Spain – with Egypt becoming a renowned center of the art form in modern times. In our global age, Cairo now as well hosts respected dancers from Asia, Europe and the USA.
Belly dancing gives gentle, strengthening exercise to the whole body with an emphasis on the belly and thighs. This class will introduce torso movements and rhythms fundamental to this art form. Students will try dancing with scarves and veils! Wear loose, comfortable clothing or dance wear and please bring a large scarf for the hips.
Patti Luchetti has studied Oriental Dance for 25+ years with such stars as Katia of Boston, Morocco of NYC and most recently, Cassandra of Minneapolis. She is director/choreographer of Shalimar’s Studio in Rockland, where she teaches belly dancing, Modern Dance and exercise classes. FMI: firstname.lastname@example.org.
