Are you interested in obtaining a USCG Captain's License? Do you want to learn the difference between an Operator Uninspected Passenger Vessel (OUPV) license and a Master 100GT license, and what experience the Coast Guard requires for each?

This informational session will help answer these questions and others about the two licenses. The different methods for completing the course requirements will also be discussed.

We plan to offer both courses in Maine during the Fall 2025, representing the Captain School Key West / Miami.

This information session is free, but please register in advance, so the instructor knows how many individuals will attend and can send login instructions.

Beginner Gardening – Starting from Seed

Mid to late May is typically an ideal time to start planting your garden in the Midcoast of Maine. We will talk about what plants can be sown directly into the ground at this time of year vs what plants should be started indoors. This class will focus on vegetable, herb and companion flower seedlings for your garden. Come prepared to get a little dirty during this is a hands-on class and walk away with seedlings to jumpstart your gardening! The cost of the class includes all materials. However, a variety of additional seedling kits will be available to purchase at class for $10 per kit. 

Mei-Ling Cheung has a background in horticulture, urban forestry and permaculture. In her newest endeavor, she is providing a variety of classes to help people learn how to live a more sustainable lifestyle. Her classes focus on practical, hands-on  skills and her style of teaching is fun and casual, yet structured and informative.

There is still a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation about Maine's compassionate end-of-life care option. Many providers and patients in Maine are still not familiar with Maine's Death with Dignity Act. In effect since September 2019, the law permits physicians to practice medical aid-in-dying under specific circumstances. Know the facts and, if qualified, the right to access medical aid in dying if they choose. Join this class to get fact-based information and all the details you need to know about Maine's law, how to have the conversation with your physician, and how to qualify for the law or support your loved one who may be qualifying. (No materials/supplies required).

What, Where, & How: Introduction to the Stock Market

This class will help you understand what the stock market is and how it works. You will learn the language of the stock market and how to paricipate (or not). Plus, topics such as managing expectations and public vs, private companies will be covered. Time will also be spent delving into the intricacies of the stock market, exploring its workings and potential pitfalls. Discover whether you’re inclined to join the market or remain an observer. If you have a company pension or a 401K, a mutual fund, or any other investment vehicle, you’re already a “player” in the stock market.

Doug Parcher is a veteran teacher/instructor and a life-long learner with many areas of content mastery.  He graduated with s composition/performance degree from The City Cellege of New York iun Haarlem. He has taught, performed and survived 25 years living in NYC before moving to a historic hobby farm on the Sheepscot river with, 2 horses, 2 goats, 2 dogs snd a cat.
