Iceland Photography Workshop & Tour

Iceland Trip 1:

Dave Oakes, the Center for Ecological Living and Learning (CELL)

We’ve partnered with Dave to bring you two opportunities to travel and learn about Iceland. What to know about Iceland?

It is one of the most eco-friendly countries in the world. Iceland was the last place on Earth to be settled by humans (Vikings). It has a 99% renewable energy supply. Many Icelanders believe in elves and trolls - adding to the magic and wonder of this mystical country and culture. You can swim outdoors in hot springs all year round; something we will experience. About 11% of Iceland is covered in glaciers, including the 3rd largest glacier in the world. Iceland has over 600 hot springs and volcanoes.

This trip is limited to 12 participants in order to allow sufficient personal attention from the leaders. Costs DO include all in-country food, lodging, travel, and activity fees.

Costs DO NOT include round trip airfare (approximately $450 - $600 as of 2021 prices). A $500 deposit is due upon registration to reserve your spot. Final payment will be due in May. Full details and itineraries are available on our website.

Iceland Photography Workshop & Tour

June 3 to 9, 2022 / $3,500 pp

Volcanoes, Glaciers, Ubiquitous Waterfalls, and Spectacular Landscapes Join us for a six day photography adventure in the Land of Fire and Ice. This tour is offered for photography enthusiasts who would like to develop their skills with landscape photography. This program is not designed for professional photographers or for those with extensive landscape photography experience. For this trip, you should be in adequate physical condition to hike 3 to 4 miles on moderate terrain carrying a day pack.

Acadian Arts Spring Retreat – The Grey Havens Inn

Escape to a grand Victorian inn on the coast of Maine with an intimate group of artists and cooks.You will get to choose one of three hands-on workshops plus have opportunity to experienceone or more special programs of morning meditation and nightly music during the four day retreat.

Three Workshops to Choose From:

1) Fusion Cooking for Family & Friends with

Chef and Cookbook Author Chris Toy

Together we’ll prepare tasty meals for yourselves and fellow artists. Instruction will include selection and care of tools, (knives, woks, pasta makers, cast iron) history of recipes (back stories), finding, choosing and preparing ingredients (shopping tips), and techniques for great results in record time (tips and tricks). Supplies and tools will be provided. We’ll be hands-on so bring your aprons and hand towels.

Instructor Chris Toy teaches Asian themed and fusion cooking for clients, community education programs statewide, Stonewall Kitchen Cooking School in York, La Roux Kitchen in Portland, and Now You’re Cooking in Bath.

2) Set Your Creative Spirit Free with

Grammy Nominated Singer-Songwriter Kat Logan

Creativity is the magic of making something happen and letting something happen. Together we will explore your true creative nature by opening to your intuition, your storehouse of knowing, to express your talent. (“Talent” from the Greek word, “Talentum”, a Grecian weight, a sum of Gold). Come discover your GOLD! We will explore in a variety of mediums, including drawing, painting, writing, and conversations. You’ll keep a process journal beginning a daily practice that you can take home with you! All levels of ability are welcome!

3) Watercolor Painting with Artist Mary Laury 

Workshop participants will do landscapes and seascapes in this four session course. If you have never painted in watercolors we will start at the beginning. If you have painted before, you will pick up some new tips and tricks as well. We all learn together! We’ll begin with a demo and lesson. Weather permitting we will go outside for plein air painting. Later in the week we’ll finish up with show and tell. We will do studies of sky, water, and rocks, culminating in a finished painting (or two) of a seascape. Materials will be provided, but bring what you have. Mary will contact each participant with a list of optional supplies.

Upcycled Driftwood Trees

Please Note: The date for this class has been changed since the printing of the brochure. The new date is Thursday, June 9.

Move over bonsai trees! A handcrafted tabletop driftwood tree will add a touch of the Maine coast to your home decor. Join instructor, Chris Toy for this fun, hands on craft activity using driftwood, beach stones, and recycled wire from political signs.

All materials will be supplied, but feel free to bring your own supplies from your walks along the shore, battery powered drills, and garden clippers.

Chris Toy is a retired Maine educator, cooking instructor, author and Registered Maine Guide. He enjoys beach combing, where he finds his craft supplies. He creates rustic upcycled crafts by combing the coastline for driftwood, beachstone, and recycled wire from political signs. His work can be viewed on Facebook at Acadian Driftwood Arts.

Join us for a six day adventure exploring Iceland’s alluring landscapes, renewable energy and sustainable practices, and learn what you can do to become a part of the solution to the challenges we face. On this trip we’ll explore Reykjavik, Iceland’s beautiful capital city, and taste some of its delicious cuisine. We’ll learn about Iceland’s Viking history, and the culture, language and geography that has shaped who Icelanders are today. You’ll get to know Hordur and Kristin, an Icelandic farm couple and friends of CELL, and partake of a traditional Icelandic meal. And at the completion of the program, you’ll develop an action plan for engaging sustainable practices in your own life back home.

Throwing Class: An Introduction to the Wheel (May)

After a demonstration on how to throw on the wheel, each participant will have an opportunity to make their own pots on the wheel (up to 2 each). They will then have a chance to decorate them with more clay for handles, use stamps for texture and special paints called underglazes to add color.

From there, participant’s work will be dried, bisqued fire (first firing), then dipped in a clear glaze and re-fired. The result is fully dinnerware, microwavable, and dishwasher safe pottery. This process takes up to 3 weeks. Masks are required during class and vaccinated participants are preferred.

Liz Proffetty holds a BFA in ceramics and certification in teaching art. She has been working as a professional potter for over 30 years and loves sharing her passion for clay with others.
